Did you know that May is skin cancer awareness month???

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Skin cancer may appear as a dark spot, linear line on nail, skin lesion, a wound that does not heal, or a simple bump on the skin.

As a podiatrist I am very aggressive and proactive when it comes to the evaluation and management of these clinical findings.

This image above is an example of what could be, melanonychia striata, or longitudinal melanonychia (LM). This is characterized as either a dark brown or brown-black longitudinal band on a toenail or fingernail. This patient was evaluated, clinical findings noted, and decision was made to perform nail unit biopsy. Results pending…
